The Best of 2010!

Finally!  Here it is, my top 11 favorite movies of 2010.  You have no idea how hard it was for me to narrow it down to only 11.  There were just too many great movies out this year.  So, without further ado, here's the list:

11. Edge of Darkness

Directed by: Martin Campbell
Stars: Mel Gibson, Danny Houston, Ray Winstone, Shawn Roberts and Bojana Novakovich
Plot: As homicide detective Thomas Craven investigates the death of his activist daughter, he uncovers not only her secret life, but a corporate cover-up and government collusion that attracts an agent tasked with cleaning up the evidence.
P.S.: I know, Mel Gibson has since come out as a crazy person, but that has not wavered my love for this movie.  It is one of few movies that I always think about, even after being almost a year since I’ve seen it.  The only thing that would have made this a better movie is if it had Robert DeNiro cast as the character of Jedburgh (he originally was attached to play this character.)

10. Green Zone

Directed by: Paul Greengrass
Stars: Matt Damon, Greg Kinnear, Amy Ryan and Brendan Gleeson
Plot: Discovering covert and faulty intelligence causes a U.S. Army officer to go rogue as he hunts for Weapons of Mass Destruction in an unstable region.
P.S.: Whether you believe we should be in Iraq is irrelevant when it comes to this movie.  If you watch this, please just enjoy it for what it is…entertainment.  Yeah, it’s based on real situations, and the message behind it may or may not be true, but who cares?  It’s a great movie.

9. Black Swan

Directed by: Darren Aronofsky
Stars: Natalie Portman, Vincent Cassell, Mila Kunis and Winona Ryder
Plot: A ballet dancer wins the lead in "Swan Lake" and is perfect for the role of the delicate White Swan, but slowly loses her mind as she becomes more and more like the evil twin sister of the White Swan, the Black Swan.
P.S.:  This is a movie about ballet.  Don’t let anyone convince you otherwise.  I was told time and time again that it’s a thriller where the ballet aspect takes the back seat.  Those people were wrong.  That being said, this was a great drama about someone collapsing under pressure.  But, when it does get into the intense part of the movie…it hits hard.

8. Restrepo

Directed by: Tim Hetherington and Sebastian Junger
Stars: Brandon Olson, Matt Piosa, Kevin Rice, Aron Hijar and Juan Restrepo
Plot: Sebastian Junger and Tim Hetherington's year dug in with the Second Platoon in one of Afghanistan's most strategically crucial valleys reveals extraordinary insight into the surreal combination of back breaking labor, deadly firefights, and camaraderie as the soldiers painfully push back the Taliban.
P.S.:  This is an extremely powerful documentary that every American must see, to see the realism of war and what these young kids go through over in Afghanistan.

7. 127 Hours

Directed by: Danny Boyle
Stars: James Franco, Kate Mara and Amber Tamblyn
Plot: A mountain climber becomes trapped under a boulder while canyoneering alone near Moab, Utah and resorts to desperate measures in order to survive.
P.S.: I watch a lot of gory, brutal horror movies…and nothing I’ve ever seen has made me cringe as much as this movie did.  It’s also not easy to make a movie about a guy in once place for an entire movie stay interesting.  Plus, James Franco’s performance of Aron Ralston was easily the best performance of the year.

6. Toy Story 3

Directed by: Lee Unkrich
Stars: Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, Joan Cusack, Ned Beatty, Don Rickles and Michael Keaton
Plot: The toys are mistakenly delivered to a day-care center instead of the attic right before Andy leaves for college, and it's up to Woody to convince the other toys that they weren't abandoned and to return home.
P.S.: Not only was it a great story, great voice acting, and great animation, it was the absolute perfect way to end the trilogy.  It’s such a great, funny, and emotional roller coaster.  Also, it’s crazy that they can make you care about these characters for three movies…and they’re only toys.

5. Let Me In

Directed by: Matt Reeves
Stars: Kodi Smit-McPhee, Chloe Moretz, Richard Jenkins and Elias Koteas
Plot: A bullied young boy befriends a young female vampire who lives in secrecy with her guardian.
P.S.:  I would say this remake (of Let The Right One In) exceeds the original in every way.  The acting, the script, the directing, the cinematography, the effects…everything is better.  Also, I didn’t think they could make the pool scene from the original any better, and they did.  Lastly, I think it would be smart to track these two main kids.  I have a feeling we’ll be seeing a lot more of them to come.

4. Kick-Ass

Directed by: Matthew Vaughn
Stars: Aaron Johnson, Nicholas Cage, Chloe Moretz, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Mark Strong and Lyndsy Fonseca
Plot: Dave Lizewski is an unnoticed high school student and comic book fan who one day decides to become a super-hero, even though he has no powers, training or meaningful reason to do so.
P.S.: A few little fun facts: Daniel Craig and Mark Wahlberg were both offered the role of Big Daddy.  Stan Lee has a cameo.  After being rejected by every major studio, Matthew Vaughn raised the money via a dinner party, and made the movie independently…he then sold it to Universal for more than he had originally asked for.  Also, Chloe Moretz insists that if she were to use any of the strong language she used in the movie at home, she would be “grounded for years.”  She referred to the movie during interviews as “the film” or “Kick-Butt”.

3. Scott Pilgrim vs. The World

Directed by: Edgar Wright
Stars: Michael Cera, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Jason Schwartzman, Brandon Routh and Chris Evans
Plot: When Scott Pilgrim falls for Ramona Flowers, he has trouble breaking up with his current girlfriend, Knives Chau, and tries to romance Ramona. As if juggling two women wasn't enough, Ramona comes with baggage: seven ex-lovers, with each of whom Scott must do battle to the death in order to win Ramona.
P.S.:  What makes this movie so great is the fact that Michael Cera (who always plays the same character) stepped out of the normal role that plays to play an ass kicking hero.  Yes, he’s still the nerdy awkward guy, but within a second can turn into a total badass.  Also, most of the credit for this movie goes to Edgar Wright, deservedly.  His direction was almost like it was its own character, and added a great feel and tone throughout the movie.  The best description of this movie that I’ve heard is: “it’s like a musical, only instead of singing, they break out into a fight.”  It describes it perfectly.

2. The Town

Directed by: Ben Affleck
Stars: Ben Affleck, Rebecca Hall, Jeremy Renner, Jon Hamm and Blake Lively
Plot: As he plans his next job, a longtime thief tries to balance his feelings for a bank manager connected to one of his earlier heists, as well as the FBI agent looking to bring him and his crew down.
P.S.:  I know a lot of people dismiss this movie because it’s a Ben Affleck movie.  But, it’s Affleck at his absolute best.  Not only does he give a great performance, he gave great direction…not to mention he co-wrote the script.  Also, Jeremy Renner is very quickly becoming one of my favorite actors, and will be robbed if he doesn’t get an Oscar nomination for his performance in this.

1. Inception

Directed by: Christopher Nolan
Stars: Leonardo Dicaprio, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Ellen Page, Cillian Murphy, Ken Watanabe, Tom Hardy and Marion Cotillard
Plot: In a world where technology exists to enter the human mind through dream invasion, a highly skilled thief is given a final chance at redemption which involves executing his toughest job to date: plant an idea instead of steal one.
P.S.: Who didn’t see this one coming?  If you’ve read any of my past posts, this should come as no surprise.  What is there to say about this movie?  Except for everything about it is perfect.  Some of the greatest actors and actresses in the world, and not only the greatest director, but the greatest team out there (the same team that made The Dark Knight) worked together to create this masterpiece that still has me talking and theorizing all these months later.

Honorable Mentions:
-The Social Network
-Exit Through The Gift Shop
-Shutter Island
-Brooklyn’s Finest
-Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1

11 Movies I'm Excited For.

So, looking at new releases for the rest of the year, it looks like there are a lot of movies coming out that I’m really excited to see.  This is a list of the top 11 that I’m looking forward to.

11. My Soul To Take
Releases: October 8th
Directed by: Wes Craven
Stars: Max Thieriot, John Magaro, Denzel Whitaker, and Zena Grey
Plot: A serial killer returns to his hometown to stalk seven children who share the same birthday as the date he was allegedly put to rest.
What makes it exciting: It’s Wes Craven back to doing what he does best, which is directing crazy awesome slasher movies.  He hasn’t done a slasher since Scream 3 in 2000.
Here’s the trailer:

10. Paranormal Activity 2
Releases: October 22nd
Directed by: Tod Williams
Stars: Unknown at this time.
Plot: After experiencing what they think are a series of "break-ins", a family sets up security cameras around their home, only to realize that the events unfolding before them are more sinister than they seem.
What makes it exciting: All of the mystery that shrouds this movie is what makes me excited.  It’s being kept such a secret that the cast hasn’t even been announced, and it comes out in just over 2 weeks.  Plus, from the looks of things, it may be the little boy who is being possessed this time.
Here’s the trailer:

9. Black Swan
Releases: December 1st
Directed by: Darren Aronofsky
Stars: Natalie Portman, Mila Kunis, and Vincent Cassel
Plot: A thriller that zeros in on the relationship between a veteran ballet dancer and a rival.
What makes it exciting:  It’s another Darren Arnofsky film, and he always makes good films.  Plus, it just looks like it will be intense.
Here’s the trailer:

8. TRON: Legacy
Releases: December 17th
Directed by: Joseph Kosinski
Stars: Jeff Bridges, Garrett Hedlund, Olivia Wilde, and Michael Sheen
Plot: Sam Flynn, the tech-savvy 27-year-old son of Kevin Flynn, looks into his father's disappearance and finds himself pulled into the same world of fierce programs and gladiatorial games where his father has been living for 25 years.
What makes it exciting:  The original TRON movie was awful.  Let’s admit that first off.  This one, looks incredible.  The CGI is insane, and it actually looks entertaining.
Here’s the trailer:

7. True Grit
Releases: December 25th
Directed by: Joel and Ethan Coen
Stars: Jeff Bridges, Matt Damon and Josh Brolin
Plot: Following the murder of her father by hired hand Tom Chaney, 14-year-old farm girl Mattie Ross sets out to capture the killer. To aid her, she hires the toughest U.S. marshal she can find, a man with "true grit," Reuben J. "Rooster" Cogburn.
What makes it exciting: Joel and Ethan Coen, Jeff Bridges, Matt Damon and Josh Brolin…remaking an old John Wayne movie…what’s not to be excited about?
Here’s the trailer:

6. Skyline
Releases: November 12th
Directed by: Colin and Greg Strause
Stars: Eric Balfour, Donald Faison, Scottie Thompson, and David Zayas
Plot: Strange lights descend on the city of Los Angeles, drawing people outside like moths to a flame where an extraterrestrial force threatens to swallow the entire human population off the face of the Earth.
What makes it exciting: The Strause brothers directed, produced, and supervised over the special effects for this movie.  Plus, it’s Turk in a feature length movie (I know, he won’t be playing Turk, but it’s still him in my heart.”
Here’s the trailer:

5. 127 Hours
Releases: November 5th
Directed by: Danny Boyle
Stars: James Franco, Kate Mara, and Lizzy Caplan
Plot: The true story of mountain climber Aron Ralston's remarkable adventure to save himself after a fallen boulder crashes on his arm and traps him in an isolated canyon in Utah.
What makes it exciting: This is going to be another one of those movies where the majority of the movie will take place in one spot.  Plus, it’s a true story and Aron Ralston himself consulted on the movie.
Here’s the trailer:

4. Due Date
Releases: November 5th
Directed by: Todd Phillips
Stars: Robert Downey, Jr., Zach Galifianakis, and Michelle Monaghan
Plot: High-strung father-to-be Peter Highman is forced to hitch a ride with aspiring actor Ethan Tremblay on a road trip in order to make it to his child's birth on time.
What makes it exciting: Todd Phillips and Zach Galifianakis teaming up for another movie, but this time with RDJ…it looks like it will be a road trip style movie, mixed with The Hangover.  Plus, Zach Galifianakis is always funny, no matter what he’s doing.
Here’s the trailer:

3. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1
Releases: November 19th
Directed by: David Yates
Stars: Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, Rupert Grint and Ralph Fiennes
Plot: Voldemort's power is growing stronger. He now has control over the Ministry of Magic and Hogwarts. Harry, Ron, and Hermione decide to finish Dumbledore's work and find the rest of the Horcruxes to defeat the Dark Lord.
What makes it exciting: I haven’t read the book, so I don’t know what to expect, but this movie looks bad-ass.  Plus, the movie is being split up into 2 films.  So we’ll be getting another 5 hours or so of Harry Potter before the series is over.
Here’s the trailer:

2. Saw 3D
Releases: October 29th
Directed by: Kevin Greutert
Stars: Tobin Bell, Costas Mandylor, Betsy Russell and Cary Elwes
Plot: As a deadly battle rages over Jigsaw's brutal legacy, a group of Jigsaw survivors gathers to seek the support of self-help guru and fellow survivor Bobby Dagen, a man whose own dark secrets unleash a new wave of terror.
What makes it exciting:  Dr. Gordon is back!  For those of you who actually like these movies, you will recognize him from the first movie, where he leaves the room (footless) and we never see or hear from him again.  But they’re finally bringing him back to wrap up the entire story for the Saw series…and yes, this will 99% surely be the last of the series.  Unless it somehow makes millions, which it won’t.
Here’s the trailer:

Yeah, that's totally Chester Bennington from Linkin Park.

1. Jackass 3D
Releases: October 15th
Directed by: Jeff Tremaine
Stars: Johnny Knoxville, Steve-O, Bam Margera, and Chris Pontius
Plot: It’s Jackass…there’s no plot.
What makes it exciting:  It’s Jackass...in 3D.  Need I say more?
Here’s the trailer:

The 11 Best PG-13 Horror Movies.

.
Alright, kiddies, new list.  First off, if you notice, I'm leaving off the "best moment" section.  I realized after a few posts it probably isn't the best idea since it actually sometimes gives major points away.  I will still do them every once in awhile though if the list calls for it.  Now, on to the list.
After seeing The Last Exorcism a few weeks ago, I decided it would be a good idea to do my favorite PG-13 horror movies.  They always get such a bad wrap, but they're not always that bad.  For example...

11. Jaws (1975)

Directed by: Stephen Spielberg
Stars: Roy Scheider, Robert Shaw, and Richard Dreyfuss
Plot: When a gigantic great white shark begins to menace the small island community of Amity, a police chief, a marine scientist and grizzled fisherman set out to stop it.
Useless trivia: In addition to the well-known nickname of "Bruce", Steven Spielberg also called the shark "the great white turd" when he really got frustrated with the troublesome animatronic fish.
P.S.: This movie was actually originally #3 on my list, but after further investigation I found out Jaws is actually only rated PG, and therefore shouldn't even be on this list.  But, by today’s standards there’s no way it wouldn’t get a PG-13, if not an R.  Also, this movie is way too good to leave off this list.

10. The Uninvited (2009)

Directed by: Charles and Thomas Guard
Stars: Emily Browning, Arielle Kebbel, Elizabeth Banks, and David Strathairn
Plot: Anna Rydell returns home to her sister (and best friend) Alex after a stint in a mental hospital, though her recovery is jeopardized thanks to her cruel stepmother, aloof father, and the presence of a ghost in their home.
Useless trivia: In the movie, Anna is meant to be fourteen/fifteen years old - in reality, Emily Browning was twenty years old at the time of filming.
P.S.: 'The Uninvited' is a remake of a 2003 Korean horror film A Tale of Two Sisters.  It is the highest grossing Korean horror film to date.

9. White Noise (2005)

Directed by: Geoffrey Sax
Stars: Michael Keaton, Chandra West, and Deborah Kara Unger
Plot: An architect's desire to speak with his wife from beyond the grave, becomes an obsession with supernatural repercussions.
Useless trivia: The recording used in the trailer that is attributed to Stanley Searles ("I love you.") is thought to be the "ghostly" voice of Searles himself, a former politician who died in 2002. The recording was said to have been made by Searles' daughter, an well-known EVP researcher named Karen Mossey.
P.S.: Electronic Voice Phenomenon (EVP) is definitely debatable as to whether it’s actually real or not, either way, go check out some video or sound clips online.  Whether you believe it or not, you have to admit, it’s creepy.  If you watch some stuff before the movie, it makes the movie that much better.

8. Cry Wolf (2005)

Directed by: Jeff Wadlow
Stars: Julian Morris, Lindy Booth, Jared Padalecki, and Jon Bon Jovi
Plot: After a local townie is murdered, a group of teenage liars create a warning e-mail of a serial killer named the Wolf, coming on the next full moon. The teens describe each death method the Wolf uses, but when their wish begins to come true, the teens must find their way out of their own death methods before its too late.
Useless trivia: After they pull Dodger out of the pool, she looks up and says something to the extent of "Owen you're my hero". Like when in 'Ferris Bueller's Day Off' after they get Cameron out of the pool he says 'Ferris Bueller you're my hero'.
P.S.: This movie could actually have been included in my Best Revenge Flicks last week, but, you don’t really know about the whole revenge aspect of the movie until the very end. (Don’t worry, that really didn’t spoil anything.)  Also, this movie has one of the coolest-looking killers out there.  He's so simple, and a more plausible look for a killer than other films.

7. Secret Window (2004)

Directed by: David Koepp
Stars: Johnny Depp, John Turturro, and Maria Bello
Plot: A writer is accused for plagiarism by a strange man, who then starts haunting him for "justice."
Useless trivia: In the scene where Johnny Depp bursts in on Maria Bello and Timothy Hutton in the Motel; David Koepp wanted Bello and Hutton to look shocked and scared - he made them both lie in the bed for 15 minutes before Depp rushed in. The production crew set up large speakers that blared static noise when the script called for them to be scared. The lights in the room were also rigged to go on when Johnny Depp opened the door, startling the actors further. No one knew exactly how to act.
P.S.: Secret Window is based on Secret Window, Secret Garden, a novella in a collection of four novellas in the book Four Past Midnight (1990) by American horror writer Stephen King. The novella was adapted for the movie by American screenwriter and director, David Koepp.

6. The Mothman Prophecies (2002)

Directed by: Mark Pellington
Stars: Richard Gere, Debra Messing, and Laura Linney
Plot: A reporter is drawn to a small West Virginia town to investigate a series of strange events, including psychic visions and the appearance of bizarre entities.
Useless trivia: The clock radio in John Klein's motel room reads: 6:14. It's a biblical reference to John Chapter 6 verse 14, which reads, 'This is indeed the prophet who is to come into the world.'
P.S.: The film is based on actual events that occurred between November 1966 and December 1967 in Point Pleasant, West Virginia.

5. It (1990)

Directed by: Tommy Lee Wallace
Stars: Harry Anderson, John Ritter, and Tim Curry
Plot: Seven youths have to defeat a demonic creature named Pennywise which dresses in a clown suit and terrorizes a 1960's town in Maine.
Useless trivia: The night guard in the asylum is called Koontz, named after Stephen King's rival author Dean R. Koontz.
P.S.: The movie is being remade as an R-Rated film for a 2011 release.  Also, I actually didn’t realize this wasn’t an R-Rated movie until I decided to do this list.  In fact, I don’t know if technically I can include it on this list because it’s actually a made-for-TV movie, so it’s rated TV-MA (and to be more specific, it was before TV had ratings, so really there’s no rating).  But, it’s close enough.

4. Carriers (2009)

Directed by: Alex and David Pastor
Stars: Chris Pine, Lou Taylor Pucci, Piper Perabo, and Emily VanCamp
Plot: Four friends fleeing a viral pandemic soon learn they are more dangerous than any virus.
Useless trivia: Frank Holloway (Christopher Meloni) says to his daughter Jodie (Kiernan Shipka) I'll be back before you can say Captain Feathersword. Captain Feathersword is a character from The Wiggles.
P.S.: This movie has a very close feel to 28 Days Later or The Road.  It’s almost post-apocalyptic or a zombie film, but it’s actually neither.  Either way, it’s a very interesting movie.

3. The Last Exorcism (2010)

Directed by: Daniel Stamm
Stars: Patrick Fabian, Ashley Bell, Iris Bahr, and Louis Herthum
Plot: A troubled evangelical minister agrees to let his last exorcism be filmed by a documentary crew.
Useless trivia: Ashley Bell did all the bends and contortions of her body on her own. No special effects were used - she is double jointed.
P.S.: I could really write a lot for this film (don’t worry, I won’t,) but there’s so much to be said.  The great part about this movie is that you don’t know whether this girl is really possessed or if she’s mentally insane.  Also, if you’ve seen the trailer or posters, don’t be thrown off by Eli Roth’s name being plastered all over it.  He really didn’t have much to do with the film since he was only a producer.

2. Drag Me To Hell (2009)

Directed by: Sam Raimi
Stars: Alison Lohman, Justin Long, and Lorna Raver
Plot: A loan officer who evicts an old woman from her home finds herself the recipient of a supernatural curse. Desperate, she turns to a seer to try and save her soul, while evil forces work to push her to a breaking point.
Useless trivia: The license plate of Sylvia Ganush's car is 99951. When it is turned upside-down, it reads IS666.
P.S.: This movie is not for everyone.  It’s a horror/comedy in the style of Evil Dead (also directed by Sam Raimi.)  It is extremely cheesy, and extremely over-the-top.  Personally, that’s what I feel makes this film so great.

1. The Sixth Sense (1999)

Directed by: M. Night Shyamalan
Stars: Bruce Willis, Haley Joel Osment, and Toni Collette
Plot: A boy who communicates with spirits that don't know they're dead seeks the help of a disheartened child psychologist.
Useless trivia: Filmed in sequence, which if you know anything about the movie making process, is extremely rare.
P.S.: Ok, if you haven’t seen this yet, you must either hate entertainment or you live in Iraq.  It is a fantastic movie (rated #127 on imdb.com’s top 250 movies of all time) that has probably one of the greatest and most mind-blowing twist endings ever.  And, for all of you who have seen this movie, I have one thing to say..."Hey, come on! I'll show you where my dad keeps his gun."  Creepiest thing in a movie ever?  I think so.

The Top 11 Best Joseph Gordon-Levitt Movies.

Okay, let’s admit it.  Joseph Gordon-Levitt is one of the greatest actors.  Ever.  Who would have thought that Tommy from 3rd Rock From the Sun would grow up to be who he is today?  As you can tell by now, I absolutely love this guy.  So, in his honor, I decided to make a quick list of his best movies…and this list isn’t so much in order, except for the top 3.

11. Stop-Loss
10. The Lookout
9. Mysterious Skin
8. Brick
7. Manic
6. Killshot
5. Uncertainty
4. Morgan M. Morgansen’s Date With Destiny
3. 10 Things I Hate About You
2. (500) Days of Summer
1. Inception

The Top 11 Revenge Flicks.

So, I just saw Machete a few days ago, and I decided a good list to go along with it would be the best revenge flicks.  Here are some of my favorites:

11. Death Sentence (2007)

Directed by: James Wan
Stars: Kevin Bacon, Garrett Hedlund, and Kelly Preston
Plot: Nick Hume is a mild-mannered executive with a perfect life, until one gruesome night he witnesses something that changes him forever. Transformed by grief, Hume eventually comes to the disturbing conclusion that no length is too great when protecting his family.
Useless trivia: Leigh Whannell has been involved in everyone of James Wan's films. This movie he plays Spink, one of the members of Billy Darley's gang. Leigh had also co-wrote and starred in Saw and co-wrote Dead Silence.
P.S. This movie is sometimes considered a remake.  Actually, it’s based on a book, which was a sequel to Death Wish.  Death Wish was a movie made in 1974 that starred Charles Bronson.

10. Four Brothers (2005)

Directed by: John Singleton
Stars: Mark Wahlberg, Tyrese Gibson, Andre Benjamin, and Garrett Hedlund
Plot: Four adopted brothers come to avenge their mother's death in what appears to be a random killing in a grocery store robbery.
Useless trivia: During the shoot, temperatures never exceeded 24 degrees Fahrenheit.
P.S. This is one of those movies that wasn’t well received by critics, but has a 6.8 rating on IMDb.  This is actually a really good rating, meaning most average people enjoyed this movie.

9. The Last House on the Left (2009)

Directed by: Dennis Iliadis
Stars: Tony Goldwyn, Monica Potter, Garret Dillahunt, and Aaron Paul
Plot: After kidnapping and brutally assaulting two young women, a gang led by a prison escapee unknowingly finds refuge at a vacation home belonging the parents of one of the victims -- a mother and father who devise an increasingly gruesome series of revenge tactics.
Useless trivia: In a March 12, 2009 Black Book interview, Sara Paxton revealed that the rape sequence took 17 hours to film.
P.S. This movie is a remake of the 1972 film of the same name.  This movie will also make you scared of garbage disposals.

8. Law Abiding Citizen (2009)

Directed by: F. Gary Gray
Stars: Gerard Butler, Jamie Foxx, and Colm Meaney
Plot: A frustrated man decides to take justice into his own hands after a plea bargain sets one of his family's killers free. He targets not only the killer but also the district attorney and others involved in the deal.
Useless trivia: The movie was filmed in an actual prison that was still taking in inmates. During certain times of the day, the inmates would be transferring into the prison and looking confused as to why there was filming equipment all over the place. The film crew locked themselves behind the cells for safety.
P.S. I went into this movie not knowing anything about it, and boy was I surprised.  It has about as much blood and gore as some horror movies.  Just a warning.

7. A Nightmare on Elm Street (2010)

Directed by: Samuel Bayer
Stars: Jackie Earl Haley, Kyle Gallner and Rooney Mara
Plot: In the dreams of his victims, a suspected child murderer stalks the children of the members of the lynch mob that killed him.
Useless trivia: This will be the first "Nightmare" movie that won't star Robert Englund as Freddy Krueger. Englund has played Freddy in every movie, including Freddy vs. Jason and the TV series "Freddy's Nightmares".
P.S. I don’t care what anyone says…the remake is better than the original.  If you don’t believe me, watch them both back to back.

6. The Horseman (2008)

Directed by: Steven Kastrissios
Stars: Peter Marshall, Caroline Marohasey, and Brad McMurray
Plot: A tender drama unfolds between a grieving father and a troubled teenage girl as they drive northbound along the quiet outback roads of Australia. What she doesn't know is that between stops, he is leaving behind a bloody trail of bodies in a revenge motivated killing spree.
Useless trivia: To help raise finance for the production, a short film was shot of the opening scene. The short film went on to win Best Independent Drama (10-30mins) at the Queensland New Filmmaker Awards (2006) and aided the feature length version to move into production.
P.S. I actually saw this movie for the first time about 4 days ago.  It was one of those “random streaming” Netflix movies.  I don’t really know much about this movie since I just barely saw it, and it’s a little known movie so there’s not much online.  Just go stream it, but make sure you’re watching “The Horseman” not “The Horsemen” (even though The Horsemen is a decent movie).

5. Taken (2008)

Directed by: Pierre Morel
Stars: Liam Neeson and Maggie Grace
Plot: A former spy relies on his old skills to save his estranged daughter, who has been forced into the slave trade.
Useless trivia: The martial art style used by Liam Neeson is Nagasu Do. It's a hybrid martial art style that borrows from Judo, Aikido and Ju Jitsu.
P.S. There are actually three different versions of this movie.  There’s the regular cut, the unrated cut (International Cut) and the UK Cut, which has a shorter torture scene with Neeson’s character attaching the clamps to the chair instead of the spikes stabbed into the man’s leg.

4. Edge of Darkness (2010)

Directed by: Martin Campbell
Stars: Mel Gibson, Ray Winstone, and Danny Houston
Plot: As homicide detective Thomas Craven investigates the death of his activist daughter, he uncovers not only her secret life, but a corporate cover-up and government collusion that attracts an agent tasked with cleaning up the evidence.
Useless trivia: Robert De Niro was originally cast as Darius Jedburgh, but dropped out due to 'creative differences' after a few days on the set.
P.S. Most people hate Mel Gibson for his ridiculous racist rants.  I also hate him.  But, my love for this movie will never die.

3. Memento (2000)

Directed by: Christopher Nolan
Stars: Guy Pearce, Carrie-Anne Moss, Joe Pantoliano
Plot: A man, suffering from short-term memory loss, uses notes and tattoos to hunt for the man he thinks killed his wife.
Useless trivia: The medical condition experienced by Leonard in this film is a real condition called Anterograde Amnesia - the inability to form new memories after damage to the hippocampus.
P.S. This movie is available to stream on Netflix.  If you haven’t seen it yet, and have Netflix, see it.

2. Kill Bill (2003 & 2004)

Directed by: Quentin Tarantino
Stars: Uma Thurman, Lucy Liu, and David Carradine
Plot: The Bride wakes up after a long coma. The baby that she carried before entering the coma is gone. The only thing on her mind is to have revenge on the assassination team that betrayed her - a team she was once part of.
Useless trivia: Approximately $60,000 of the movie's budget was used for producing swords and sword accessories.
P.S. In case you’re wondering about the dates, this movie was actually split into 2 volumes, since the entire movie together would have been about 4 hours and 10 minutes long.

1. Hard Candy (2005)

Directed by: David Slade
Stars: Patrick Wilson, Ellen Page, Sandra Oh, Odessa Rae, and G.J. Echternkamp
Plot: A mature 14-year old girl meets a charming 32-year old photographer on the Internet. Suspecting that he is a pedophile, she goes to his home in an attempt to expose him.
Useless trivia: Patrick Wilson briefly passed out due to overexertion during filming of the intense surgery scene.
P.S. Ok, a few things.  First, that cast list above, that’s it.  Those 5 people are the only people in the entire movie, and other than Wilson and Page, the other 3 have about 30 seconds of screen time each.  So, basically it’s the 2 of them the entire movie.  Second, the one thing that makes this movie way more intense than normal is that there is very little score.  Most of the soundtrack is ambient sounds and heavy breathing.  Last, if this movie doesn’t make you want to cry, you are a woman.
