The 11 Best PG-13 Horror Movies.

.
Alright, kiddies, new list.  First off, if you notice, I'm leaving off the "best moment" section.  I realized after a few posts it probably isn't the best idea since it actually sometimes gives major points away.  I will still do them every once in awhile though if the list calls for it.  Now, on to the list.
After seeing The Last Exorcism a few weeks ago, I decided it would be a good idea to do my favorite PG-13 horror movies.  They always get such a bad wrap, but they're not always that bad.  For example...

11. Jaws (1975)

Directed by: Stephen Spielberg
Stars: Roy Scheider, Robert Shaw, and Richard Dreyfuss
Plot: When a gigantic great white shark begins to menace the small island community of Amity, a police chief, a marine scientist and grizzled fisherman set out to stop it.
Useless trivia: In addition to the well-known nickname of "Bruce", Steven Spielberg also called the shark "the great white turd" when he really got frustrated with the troublesome animatronic fish.
P.S.: This movie was actually originally #3 on my list, but after further investigation I found out Jaws is actually only rated PG, and therefore shouldn't even be on this list.  But, by today’s standards there’s no way it wouldn’t get a PG-13, if not an R.  Also, this movie is way too good to leave off this list.

10. The Uninvited (2009)

Directed by: Charles and Thomas Guard
Stars: Emily Browning, Arielle Kebbel, Elizabeth Banks, and David Strathairn
Plot: Anna Rydell returns home to her sister (and best friend) Alex after a stint in a mental hospital, though her recovery is jeopardized thanks to her cruel stepmother, aloof father, and the presence of a ghost in their home.
Useless trivia: In the movie, Anna is meant to be fourteen/fifteen years old - in reality, Emily Browning was twenty years old at the time of filming.
P.S.: 'The Uninvited' is a remake of a 2003 Korean horror film A Tale of Two Sisters.  It is the highest grossing Korean horror film to date.

9. White Noise (2005)

Directed by: Geoffrey Sax
Stars: Michael Keaton, Chandra West, and Deborah Kara Unger
Plot: An architect's desire to speak with his wife from beyond the grave, becomes an obsession with supernatural repercussions.
Useless trivia: The recording used in the trailer that is attributed to Stanley Searles ("I love you.") is thought to be the "ghostly" voice of Searles himself, a former politician who died in 2002. The recording was said to have been made by Searles' daughter, an well-known EVP researcher named Karen Mossey.
P.S.: Electronic Voice Phenomenon (EVP) is definitely debatable as to whether it’s actually real or not, either way, go check out some video or sound clips online.  Whether you believe it or not, you have to admit, it’s creepy.  If you watch some stuff before the movie, it makes the movie that much better.

8. Cry Wolf (2005)

Directed by: Jeff Wadlow
Stars: Julian Morris, Lindy Booth, Jared Padalecki, and Jon Bon Jovi
Plot: After a local townie is murdered, a group of teenage liars create a warning e-mail of a serial killer named the Wolf, coming on the next full moon. The teens describe each death method the Wolf uses, but when their wish begins to come true, the teens must find their way out of their own death methods before its too late.
Useless trivia: After they pull Dodger out of the pool, she looks up and says something to the extent of "Owen you're my hero". Like when in 'Ferris Bueller's Day Off' after they get Cameron out of the pool he says 'Ferris Bueller you're my hero'.
P.S.: This movie could actually have been included in my Best Revenge Flicks last week, but, you don’t really know about the whole revenge aspect of the movie until the very end. (Don’t worry, that really didn’t spoil anything.)  Also, this movie has one of the coolest-looking killers out there.  He's so simple, and a more plausible look for a killer than other films.

7. Secret Window (2004)

Directed by: David Koepp
Stars: Johnny Depp, John Turturro, and Maria Bello
Plot: A writer is accused for plagiarism by a strange man, who then starts haunting him for "justice."
Useless trivia: In the scene where Johnny Depp bursts in on Maria Bello and Timothy Hutton in the Motel; David Koepp wanted Bello and Hutton to look shocked and scared - he made them both lie in the bed for 15 minutes before Depp rushed in. The production crew set up large speakers that blared static noise when the script called for them to be scared. The lights in the room were also rigged to go on when Johnny Depp opened the door, startling the actors further. No one knew exactly how to act.
P.S.: Secret Window is based on Secret Window, Secret Garden, a novella in a collection of four novellas in the book Four Past Midnight (1990) by American horror writer Stephen King. The novella was adapted for the movie by American screenwriter and director, David Koepp.

6. The Mothman Prophecies (2002)

Directed by: Mark Pellington
Stars: Richard Gere, Debra Messing, and Laura Linney
Plot: A reporter is drawn to a small West Virginia town to investigate a series of strange events, including psychic visions and the appearance of bizarre entities.
Useless trivia: The clock radio in John Klein's motel room reads: 6:14. It's a biblical reference to John Chapter 6 verse 14, which reads, 'This is indeed the prophet who is to come into the world.'
P.S.: The film is based on actual events that occurred between November 1966 and December 1967 in Point Pleasant, West Virginia.

5. It (1990)

Directed by: Tommy Lee Wallace
Stars: Harry Anderson, John Ritter, and Tim Curry
Plot: Seven youths have to defeat a demonic creature named Pennywise which dresses in a clown suit and terrorizes a 1960's town in Maine.
Useless trivia: The night guard in the asylum is called Koontz, named after Stephen King's rival author Dean R. Koontz.
P.S.: The movie is being remade as an R-Rated film for a 2011 release.  Also, I actually didn’t realize this wasn’t an R-Rated movie until I decided to do this list.  In fact, I don’t know if technically I can include it on this list because it’s actually a made-for-TV movie, so it’s rated TV-MA (and to be more specific, it was before TV had ratings, so really there’s no rating).  But, it’s close enough.

4. Carriers (2009)

Directed by: Alex and David Pastor
Stars: Chris Pine, Lou Taylor Pucci, Piper Perabo, and Emily VanCamp
Plot: Four friends fleeing a viral pandemic soon learn they are more dangerous than any virus.
Useless trivia: Frank Holloway (Christopher Meloni) says to his daughter Jodie (Kiernan Shipka) I'll be back before you can say Captain Feathersword. Captain Feathersword is a character from The Wiggles.
P.S.: This movie has a very close feel to 28 Days Later or The Road.  It’s almost post-apocalyptic or a zombie film, but it’s actually neither.  Either way, it’s a very interesting movie.

3. The Last Exorcism (2010)

Directed by: Daniel Stamm
Stars: Patrick Fabian, Ashley Bell, Iris Bahr, and Louis Herthum
Plot: A troubled evangelical minister agrees to let his last exorcism be filmed by a documentary crew.
Useless trivia: Ashley Bell did all the bends and contortions of her body on her own. No special effects were used - she is double jointed.
P.S.: I could really write a lot for this film (don’t worry, I won’t,) but there’s so much to be said.  The great part about this movie is that you don’t know whether this girl is really possessed or if she’s mentally insane.  Also, if you’ve seen the trailer or posters, don’t be thrown off by Eli Roth’s name being plastered all over it.  He really didn’t have much to do with the film since he was only a producer.

2. Drag Me To Hell (2009)

Directed by: Sam Raimi
Stars: Alison Lohman, Justin Long, and Lorna Raver
Plot: A loan officer who evicts an old woman from her home finds herself the recipient of a supernatural curse. Desperate, she turns to a seer to try and save her soul, while evil forces work to push her to a breaking point.
Useless trivia: The license plate of Sylvia Ganush's car is 99951. When it is turned upside-down, it reads IS666.
P.S.: This movie is not for everyone.  It’s a horror/comedy in the style of Evil Dead (also directed by Sam Raimi.)  It is extremely cheesy, and extremely over-the-top.  Personally, that’s what I feel makes this film so great.

1. The Sixth Sense (1999)

Directed by: M. Night Shyamalan
Stars: Bruce Willis, Haley Joel Osment, and Toni Collette
Plot: A boy who communicates with spirits that don't know they're dead seeks the help of a disheartened child psychologist.
Useless trivia: Filmed in sequence, which if you know anything about the movie making process, is extremely rare.
P.S.: Ok, if you haven’t seen this yet, you must either hate entertainment or you live in Iraq.  It is a fantastic movie (rated #127 on imdb.com’s top 250 movies of all time) that has probably one of the greatest and most mind-blowing twist endings ever.  And, for all of you who have seen this movie, I have one thing to say..."Hey, come on! I'll show you where my dad keeps his gun."  Creepiest thing in a movie ever?  I think so.

The Top 11 Best Joseph Gordon-Levitt Movies.

Okay, let’s admit it.  Joseph Gordon-Levitt is one of the greatest actors.  Ever.  Who would have thought that Tommy from 3rd Rock From the Sun would grow up to be who he is today?  As you can tell by now, I absolutely love this guy.  So, in his honor, I decided to make a quick list of his best movies…and this list isn’t so much in order, except for the top 3.

11. Stop-Loss
10. The Lookout
9. Mysterious Skin
8. Brick
7. Manic
6. Killshot
5. Uncertainty
4. Morgan M. Morgansen’s Date With Destiny
3. 10 Things I Hate About You
2. (500) Days of Summer
1. Inception

9.14.2010

The Top 11 Revenge Flicks.

So, I just saw Machete a few days ago, and I decided a good list to go along with it would be the best revenge flicks.  Here are some of my favorites:

11. Death Sentence (2007)

Directed by: James Wan
Stars: Kevin Bacon, Garrett Hedlund, and Kelly Preston
Plot: Nick Hume is a mild-mannered executive with a perfect life, until one gruesome night he witnesses something that changes him forever. Transformed by grief, Hume eventually comes to the disturbing conclusion that no length is too great when protecting his family.
Useless trivia: Leigh Whannell has been involved in everyone of James Wan's films. This movie he plays Spink, one of the members of Billy Darley's gang. Leigh had also co-wrote and starred in Saw and co-wrote Dead Silence.
P.S. This movie is sometimes considered a remake.  Actually, it’s based on a book, which was a sequel to Death Wish.  Death Wish was a movie made in 1974 that starred Charles Bronson.

10. Four Brothers (2005)

Directed by: John Singleton
Stars: Mark Wahlberg, Tyrese Gibson, Andre Benjamin, and Garrett Hedlund
Plot: Four adopted brothers come to avenge their mother's death in what appears to be a random killing in a grocery store robbery.
Useless trivia: During the shoot, temperatures never exceeded 24 degrees Fahrenheit.
P.S. This is one of those movies that wasn’t well received by critics, but has a 6.8 rating on IMDb.  This is actually a really good rating, meaning most average people enjoyed this movie.

9. The Last House on the Left (2009)

Directed by: Dennis Iliadis
Stars: Tony Goldwyn, Monica Potter, Garret Dillahunt, and Aaron Paul
Plot: After kidnapping and brutally assaulting two young women, a gang led by a prison escapee unknowingly finds refuge at a vacation home belonging the parents of one of the victims -- a mother and father who devise an increasingly gruesome series of revenge tactics.
Useless trivia: In a March 12, 2009 Black Book interview, Sara Paxton revealed that the rape sequence took 17 hours to film.
P.S. This movie is a remake of the 1972 film of the same name.  This movie will also make you scared of garbage disposals.

8. Law Abiding Citizen (2009)

Directed by: F. Gary Gray
Stars: Gerard Butler, Jamie Foxx, and Colm Meaney
Plot: A frustrated man decides to take justice into his own hands after a plea bargain sets one of his family's killers free. He targets not only the killer but also the district attorney and others involved in the deal.
Useless trivia: The movie was filmed in an actual prison that was still taking in inmates. During certain times of the day, the inmates would be transferring into the prison and looking confused as to why there was filming equipment all over the place. The film crew locked themselves behind the cells for safety.
P.S. I went into this movie not knowing anything about it, and boy was I surprised.  It has about as much blood and gore as some horror movies.  Just a warning.

7. A Nightmare on Elm Street (2010)

Directed by: Samuel Bayer
Stars: Jackie Earl Haley, Kyle Gallner and Rooney Mara
Plot: In the dreams of his victims, a suspected child murderer stalks the children of the members of the lynch mob that killed him.
Useless trivia: This will be the first "Nightmare" movie that won't star Robert Englund as Freddy Krueger. Englund has played Freddy in every movie, including Freddy vs. Jason and the TV series "Freddy's Nightmares".
P.S. I don’t care what anyone says…the remake is better than the original.  If you don’t believe me, watch them both back to back.

6. The Horseman (2008)

Directed by: Steven Kastrissios
Stars: Peter Marshall, Caroline Marohasey, and Brad McMurray
Plot: A tender drama unfolds between a grieving father and a troubled teenage girl as they drive northbound along the quiet outback roads of Australia. What she doesn't know is that between stops, he is leaving behind a bloody trail of bodies in a revenge motivated killing spree.
Useless trivia: To help raise finance for the production, a short film was shot of the opening scene. The short film went on to win Best Independent Drama (10-30mins) at the Queensland New Filmmaker Awards (2006) and aided the feature length version to move into production.
P.S. I actually saw this movie for the first time about 4 days ago.  It was one of those “random streaming” Netflix movies.  I don’t really know much about this movie since I just barely saw it, and it’s a little known movie so there’s not much online.  Just go stream it, but make sure you’re watching “The Horseman” not “The Horsemen” (even though The Horsemen is a decent movie).

5. Taken (2008)

Directed by: Pierre Morel
Stars: Liam Neeson and Maggie Grace
Plot: A former spy relies on his old skills to save his estranged daughter, who has been forced into the slave trade.
Useless trivia: The martial art style used by Liam Neeson is Nagasu Do. It's a hybrid martial art style that borrows from Judo, Aikido and Ju Jitsu.
P.S. There are actually three different versions of this movie.  There’s the regular cut, the unrated cut (International Cut) and the UK Cut, which has a shorter torture scene with Neeson’s character attaching the clamps to the chair instead of the spikes stabbed into the man’s leg.

4. Edge of Darkness (2010)

Directed by: Martin Campbell
Stars: Mel Gibson, Ray Winstone, and Danny Houston
Plot: As homicide detective Thomas Craven investigates the death of his activist daughter, he uncovers not only her secret life, but a corporate cover-up and government collusion that attracts an agent tasked with cleaning up the evidence.
Useless trivia: Robert De Niro was originally cast as Darius Jedburgh, but dropped out due to 'creative differences' after a few days on the set.
P.S. Most people hate Mel Gibson for his ridiculous racist rants.  I also hate him.  But, my love for this movie will never die.

3. Memento (2000)

Directed by: Christopher Nolan
Stars: Guy Pearce, Carrie-Anne Moss, Joe Pantoliano
Plot: A man, suffering from short-term memory loss, uses notes and tattoos to hunt for the man he thinks killed his wife.
Useless trivia: The medical condition experienced by Leonard in this film is a real condition called Anterograde Amnesia - the inability to form new memories after damage to the hippocampus.
P.S. This movie is available to stream on Netflix.  If you haven’t seen it yet, and have Netflix, see it.

2. Kill Bill (2003 & 2004)

Directed by: Quentin Tarantino
Stars: Uma Thurman, Lucy Liu, and David Carradine
Plot: The Bride wakes up after a long coma. The baby that she carried before entering the coma is gone. The only thing on her mind is to have revenge on the assassination team that betrayed her - a team she was once part of.
Useless trivia: Approximately $60,000 of the movie's budget was used for producing swords and sword accessories.
P.S. In case you’re wondering about the dates, this movie was actually split into 2 volumes, since the entire movie together would have been about 4 hours and 10 minutes long.

1. Hard Candy (2005)

Directed by: David Slade
Stars: Patrick Wilson, Ellen Page, Sandra Oh, Odessa Rae, and G.J. Echternkamp
Plot: A mature 14-year old girl meets a charming 32-year old photographer on the Internet. Suspecting that he is a pedophile, she goes to his home in an attempt to expose him.
Useless trivia: Patrick Wilson briefly passed out due to overexertion during filming of the intense surgery scene.
P.S. Ok, a few things.  First, that cast list above, that’s it.  Those 5 people are the only people in the entire movie, and other than Wilson and Page, the other 3 have about 30 seconds of screen time each.  So, basically it’s the 2 of them the entire movie.  Second, the one thing that makes this movie way more intense than normal is that there is very little score.  Most of the soundtrack is ambient sounds and heavy breathing.  Last, if this movie doesn’t make you want to cry, you are a woman.

The Top 11 Movies I Want To See Sequels To.

In keeping the spirit of my last post of “The 11 Best Sequels”, I’ve decided to do a quick list of “The Top 11 Movies I Want To See Sequels To”.  These are movies where there is no sequel out, but I would really like to see happen someday.  *Some of these may have been announced, but are not in development.*

11. Punisher: War Zone
10. The Incredible Hulk
9. The Incredibles
8. Friday the 13th
7. 28 Weeks Later
6. The Collector
5. Cloverfield
4. District 9
3. Sin City
2. Star Wars
1. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

9.09.2010

The 11 Best Sequels.

Ok, so first off, I'm changing my lists from the Top 10 to Top 11. I always have 1 movie at the end of a list that makes me sad to leave off.  So, from now on, lists will be Top 11.  I have taken the initiative to go back and update the last lists with an 11th entry.  So, make sure you check those out.
Now, on to today's list.  There are a lot of sequels coming out, so I decided to make that this weeks list.  Now, I'm sure some of you are sensing a pattern in which I'm not putting many older movies on.  That's because I'm not a fan.  So you won't be seeing any Empire Strikes Back, or Godfather 2, Aliens or anything like that.  These are more modern movies.  Which brings us to...

 11. Hellboy 2: The Golden Army (2008)

Directed by: Guilermo Del Toro
Stars: Ron Perlman, Selma Blair, Doug Jones, and Luke Goss
Follow up to: Hellboy
Plot: The mythical world starts a rebellion against humanity in order to rule the Earth, so Hellboy and his team must save the world from the rebellious creatures.
Useless trivia: Guillermo del Toro wrote an ending which ultimately went unused in the theatrical release: A secret base is found in the Antarctic, where Kroenen, the clockwork Nazi villain from the first film, is brought back to life as Rasputin steps out of the shadows. This material was filmed as an animated comic and appears in the DVD bonus features as the "Zinco Epilogue". This epilogue provides the setup for a potential third Hellboy film.
Best moment: Hellboy and Abe Sapien get drunk and sing "Can't Smile Without You" by Barry Manilow.
P.S.: Now that Del Toro isn't doing The Hobbit, this hopefully means he will be doing Hellboy 3. *fingers crossed*

10. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (2007)

Directed by: David Yates
Stars: Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint
Follow up to: Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone, Chamber of Secrets, Prisoner of Azkaban, and Goblet of Fire
Plot: With their warning about Lord Voldemort's return scoffed at, Harry and Dumbledore are targeted by the Wizard authorities as an authoritarian bureaucrat slowly seizes power at Hogwarts.
Useless trivia: The Department of Mysteries set marks the first time that a totally computer-generated set was used throughout the movie. Building the set practically is too expensive since an estimation of 15000 crystal balls are needed and it will take a lot of time to clean and setup again if a retake is required
Best moment: The final fight at the Department of Mysteries.
P.S.: I know most people say that Azkaban is the best one, also I hear Half Blood Prince is the best.  But, I'm still sticking with this one.

9. Bad Boys 2 (2003)

Directed by: Michael Bay
Stars: Will Smith, Martin Lawrence, and Jordi Molla
Follow up to: Bad Boys
Plot: Narcotics cops Mike Lowrey and Marcus Bennett head up a task force investigating the flow of ecstasy into Miami. Their search leads to a dangerous kingpin, whose plan to control the city's drug traffic has touched off an underground war.
Useless trivia: Director Cameo: Michael Bay the man driving the P.O.S. car that Marcus attempts to confiscate, but Mike tells him to go for a better car.
Best part: In the opening scene, the two main characters bust up a KKK rally.  What makes this part even better is that the TNT leader is played by Henry Rollins.
P.S.: I'm sure most of you are thinking "Bad Boys 2? Really?" If you haven't seen it recently, go watch it again.  It may not be as good as the first (because the first is one of the greatest action movies ever) but this one is fantastic as far as sequels go.

8. The Bourne Ultimatum (2007)

Directed by: Paul Greengrass
Stars: Matt Damon, Julia Stiles, and David Strathairn
Follow up to: The Bourne Identity and The Bourne Supremacy
Plot: Jason Bourne dodges a ruthless CIA official and his agents from a new assassination program while searching for the origins of his life as a trained killer.
Useless trivia: The film crew were unable to shut down Waterloo station, so pedestrians in the station can be seen looking and pointing at the camera.
Best moment: The fight between Bourne and Desh in the apartments is one of the coolest hand-to-hand fight scenes ever.
P.S.: This is another one where people might like "Supremacy" better, but it's all just my opinion.  Another thing, The Bourne Conspiracy (which is a video game based on the books) is actually a really well made game where you get to do all the fist fighting, shooting, and car chases in one game.

7. Lord of the Rings: Return of the King (2003)

Directed by: Peter Jackson
Stars: Where to start? Elijah Wood, Viggo Mortenson, Sean Astin, Orlando Bloom, Ian McKellan, etc.
Follow up to: Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers
Plot: The former Fellowship of the Ring prepare for the final battle for Middle Earth, while Frodo and Sam approach Mount Doom to destroy the One Ring.
Useless trivia: Peter Jackson is arachnophobic and based the Shelob design on the types of spiders he feared the most.
Best moment: Obviously, the last battle is the best part.  Which is actually then followed by  the worst part of the entire series...the 26 different endings.
P.S.: The Hobbit is in development right now.  Actually, Guillermo Del Toro was set to direct, but dropped out suddenly and left the film without a director.  So, now Jackson says that if they don't find anyone soon, he will step up and do it himself.

6. X2: X-Men United (2003)

Directed by: Bryan Singer
Stars: Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellan, Hugh Jackman, and Halle Berry
Follow up to: X-Men
Plot: The X-Men band together to find a mutant assassin who has made an attempt on the President's life, while the Mutant Academy is attacked by military forces.
Useless trivia: Alan Cumming had to endure 10 hours of make-up to become Nightcrawler for the scene in the church (where his skin/make-up is shown from the waist up).
Best moment: Nightcrawler in the White House trying to assassinate the president.
P.S.: In most people's opinion, this was the last good X-Men movie.

5. The Devil's Rejects (2005)

Directed by: Rob Zombie
Stars: Sid Haig, Bill Moseley, and Sheri Moon Zombie
Follow up to: House of 1,000 Corpses
Plot:  Baby and Otis escape and rendezvous later with the Firefly patriarch, the mad clown Capt Spaulding. After a mind blowing murder escapade at a dusty desert motel they retreat to a frontier town whorehouse run by Spaulding's adopted "brother" Charlie.  While Sheriff Wydell slowly loses his mind in his quest for revenge, he enlists the help of two equally disgusting bounty hunters and tracks the the trio.
Useless trivia:  The film originally had a subplot involving scenes with Dr. Satan. In an interview, Rob Zombie said that he cut these scenes because seeing Dr. Satan in this film would be like seeing Chewbacca in Bonnie and Clyde. Zombie then went on to explain that all the Dr. Satan scenes would be restored in the "deleted scenes" section of the the DVD.
Best moment: Wendy is forced to wear the skinned face of her dead husband, and is then let go...only to be run over by a truck seconds later.
P.S.: Recently, Rob Zombie put a poll on his site about what movie he should make next.  One of the choices is a sequel to The Devils Rejects.  So, we may be getting another one soon?

4. Toy Story 3 (2010)

Directed by: Lee Unkrich
Stars: Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, Joan Cusack and Ned Beatty
Follow up to: Toy Story, Toy Story 2
Plot: The toys are mistakenly delivered to a day-care center instead of the attic right before Andy leaves for college, and it's up to Woody to convince the other toys that they weren't abandoned and to return home.
Useless trivia: Blake Clark became the new voice of Slinky Dog, replacing Jim Varney, who died in 2000. Clark was good friends with Varney prior to his death.
Best moment: SPOILER ALERT for those who haven't seen it yet!  At the end, the toys are in a trash incinerator and there is basically no escape.  The toys then accept their fate, and realize it's going to be the end for them.
P.S.: This is another movie where I actually do like the first one better.  But, I do know a lot of people that like this (as well as the second) as much as, if not more than, the first.

3. Spider-Man 2 (2004)

Directed by: Sam Raimi
Stars: Tobey Maguire, Kirsten Dunst, James Franco, and Alfred Molina
Follow up to: Spider-Man
Plot: Peter Parker is beset with troubles in his failing personal life as he battles a brilliant scientist named Doctor Otto Octavius, who becomes Doctor Octopus (aka Doc Ock), after an accident causes him to bond psychically with mechanical tentacles that do his bidding.
Useless trivia: Filming began before an official script was completed.
Best moment: The talk Peter has with his aunt, letting her know that his uncle's death was his fault.
P.S.: The Spider-Man series is actually undergoing a reboot.  Filming will start in December with Andrew Garfield in the titular role.

2. Saw VI (2009)

Directed by: Kevin Greutert
Stars:  Mark Rolston, Costas Mandylor and Tobin Bell
Plot: Special Agent Strahm is dead, and Detective Hoffman has emerged as the unchallenged successor to Jigsaw's legacy. However, when the FBI draws closer to Hoffman, he is forced to set a game into motion, and Jigsaw's grand scheme is finally understood.
Follow up to: Saw, Saw 2, 3, 4, and 5
Useless trivia: Prior to the film's release, Costas Mandylor (Hoffman) didn't even know if his character lived or died in the ending due to shooting multiple endings.
Best moment: During the second trap of the film, Dan (Mark Rolston) goes up against the janitor who works for him.  The basic plan of the trap is to simply hold your breath until the other person dies.
P.S.: Saw 3D (the 7th film) is said to be the final film in the series that will answer all questions.  It will be release at the end of October.  Also, I know a lot of people dismiss these movies because of the label "torture-porn" (which is stupid, because only the 3rd movie has ANY nudity and it's essential to the trap,) but they all actually are extremely well made and have a very intricate plot.  This one in specific actually has a great plot and extremely intense traps.

1. The Dark Knight (2008)

Directed by: Christopher Nolan
Stars: Christian Bale, Heath Ledger, and Aaron Eckhart
Follow up to: Batman Begins
Plot: Batman, Gordon and Harvey Dent are forced to deal with the chaos unleashed by an anarchist mastermind known only as the Joker, as it drives each of them to their limits.
Useless trivia: The first Batman movie to not have the word "Batman" in the title.
Best moment: The entire thing...start to finish...or watching a pencil disappear.
P.S.: Did this really surprise anyone?  This is really one of the greatest movies ever made.  It will be showing up on multiple lists, I'm sure.  There really isn't much to say about this movie that hasn't already been said.  There is, however, a finish to the series in pre-production right now.  We can only hope it's as good as this one.

The 11 best foreign horror films.

If you know me at all, you will know my love of horror movies.  But, I can't just do a "best horror movies" list, that would leave off too many movies.  So, I'll be breaking them down into different categories, starting with foreign horror movies. WARNING: Some of these have clips, and some of those clips will be very bloody or disturbing.  Also, the clips will have spoilers.

11. El Orfanato / The Orphanage (Spain, 2007)
Directed by: Juan Antonio Bayona
Stars: Belen Rueda, Fernando Cayo
Plot: A woman brings her family back to her childhood home, where she opens an orphanage for handicapped children. Before long, her son starts to communicate with an invisible new friend.
Best part:  Laura, in attempt to speak with the ghosts about her son, decides to play the game the children at the orphanage used to play.  Since I couldn't find the clip, here's the trailer.  Which actually shows part of that scene.

P.S.  This movie is being remade in an American version, but has no information other than a release date of 2013.

10. Severance (United Kingdom, 2006)
Directed by: Christopher Smith
Stars: Laura Harris, Danny Dyer, Toby Stephens
Plot: A team-building weekend in the mountains of Eastern Europe goes horribly wrong for the sales division of the multi-national weapons company Palisade Defence when they become the victims of a group of crazed killers who will stop at nothing to see them dead.
Best part:

P.S. This is the only movie on the list that is actually a comedy / horror.  It is described as The Office meets Deliverance.

9. Ils / Them (France, 2006)
Directed by: David Moreau, Xavier Palud
Stars: Olivia Bonamy, Michael Cohen
Plot: Lucas and Clementine live peacefully in their isolated country house, but one night they wake up to strange noise... they're not alone... and a group of hooded assailants begin to terrorize them throughout the night.
Best part: Lucas is searching downstairs for whatever is making noises.  After he gets hurt, he runs back upstairs to the bedroom to meet Clementine.  As they close the door, you get the first glimpse of the killers.  (if you look closely, you will see it quickly in the trailer.)

P.S. This movie is pretty much The Strangers with a slight twist.  But it's still awesome anyway.

8. Funny Games (Austria, 1997)
Directed by: Michael Haneke
Stars: Susanne Lothar, Ulrich Muhe, Arno Frisch, Frank Giering
Plot: Two psychotic young men take a mother, father, and son hostage in their vacation cabin and force them to play sadistic "games" with one another for their own amusement.
Best part: I'm gonig to give you an extra warning right here...this clip is pretty disturbing.  DO NOT watch it, unless you are prepared. Also, it's in German, but you'll get the idea.

P.S. As much as this movie rocks, there has been an English remake with Naomi Watts and Tim Roth.  It has been done shot-for-shot and it was even directed by the same person.  So, you might as well watch the English version so you don't have to read subtitles.

7. Wolf Creek (Australia, 2005)
Directed by: Greg Mclean
Stars: John Jarratt, Cassandra Magrath, Kestie Morassi, Nathan Phillips
Plot: Stranded backpackers in remote Australia fall prey to a murderous bushman who offers to fix their car, then takes them captive
Best part:

P.S. This movie is shot entirely hand-held (a la Blair Witch Project,) but you would not know it from watching it.

6. [Rec] (Spain, 2007)
Directed by: Jaume Balaguero, Paco Plaza
Stars: Manuela Velasco, Ferran Terraza, Jorge-Yamam Serrano
Plot: The film follows a Spanish late-night television reporter,Ángela Vidal, through the lens of her cameraman, Pablo. During one report of the happenings in a local fire station in Barcelona, the duo follow a team of firefighters who get a call from an apartment building nearby about a trapped woman. When they arrive, they find the apartment's residents huddled in the lobby. They go upstairs to find a woman who is obviously distressed. What follows is a night that none of them will ever forget.
Best part:

P.S. This is another one that has been remade in English with Jennifer Carpenter.  The English version is called Quarantine and is again shot-for-shot.  So again, if you've seen Quarantine, it's the exact movie.

5. A l'Interieur / Inside (France, 2007)
Directed by: Alexandre Bustillo, Julien Maury
Stars: Alysson Paradis, Beatrice Dalle
Plot: Four months after the death of her husband, a woman on the brink of motherhood is tormented in her home by a strange woman who wants her unborn baby.
Best part: A simple, but creepy scene where Sarah is sitting on her couch, and you vaguely see "la Femme" standing behind her.  But, Sarah doesn't know she's there.  Since I couldn't find the clip, here's the trailer.

P.S. Most people will hate this movie.  It is extremely disturbing, and extremely bloody.  I would absolutely not recommend this for anyone who is even slightly squeamish, or if you don't like the idea of a woman wanting to cut a baby out of a pregnant woman's stomach.

4. Haute Tension / High Tension (France, 2003)
Directed by: Alexandre Aja
Stars: Cecile de France, Maiwenn le Besco, Philippe Nahon
Plot:Two college friends, Marie and Alexa, encounter loads of trouble (and blood) while on vacation at Alexa's parents' country home when a mysterious killer invades their quiet getaway.
Best part: (Sorry the quality is pretty bad)

P.S. This movie has a few plot holes that knocked it down a few notches.  But nothing that really upsets the rest of the movie.  It is also extremely bloody and violent, as you can tell by the clip above.

3. Eden Lake (United Kingdom, 2008)
Directed by: James Watkins
Stars: Kelly Reilly, Michael Fassbender
Plot: Refusing to let anything spoil their romantic weekend break, a young couple confront a gang of loutish youths with terrifyingly brutal consequences.
Best part: I don't want to give anything away, but the ending to this movie is probably one of the most frustrating, anger-inspiring, yet perfect ending to a movie that most people will hate.  Since I don't want to show the whole ending, here's the trailer.

P.S. This is a great movie to talk about with people who have seen it. It is one of the few great horror movies that makes you think.

2.  Lat Den Ratte Komma In / Let The Right One In (Sweden, 2008)
Directed by: Tomas Alfredson
Stars: Kare Hedebrant, Lina Leandersson
Plot: Oscar, an overlooked and bullied boy, finds love and revenge through Eli, a beautiful but peculiar girl who turns out to be a vampire.
Best part: It won't let me embed it, but it is a must-see scene.  Click here for a link to the youtube page.
P.S. The English remake of this movie, called Let Me In, comes out October 1.  It stars Kodi Smit-McPhee (of The Road) and Chloe Moretz (from Kick Ass).  It is directed by Matt Reeves, but is apparently not so much a remake of Let The Right One In, but a different adaptation of the book it was based on.

1. Martyrs (France, 2008)
Directed by: Pascal Laugier
Stars: Morjana Alaoui, Mylene Jampanoi, Catherine Begin
Plot: A young woman's quest for revenge against the people who kidnapped and tormented her as a child leads her and a friend, who is also a victim of child abuse, on a terrifying journey into a living hell of depravity.
Best part: The last half of this movie is the most intense, brutal, terrifying, insane thing I've ever seen in a movie.  You will need to just watch this movie to see what I mean.  Here's the trailer.

P.S. This is absolutely one of my favorite horror movies ever.  But, I warn you, it is very hard to watch.  It is another movie that is supposed to be remade in English, although as of this point, there is no information about it.
